Shelby County was named after patriot Isaac Shelby and was organized in 1821. The county covers 412.6 square miles and has a total population of 44,337 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011). Its seat of Shelbyville, located roughly 22 miles southeast of Indianapolis, is the largest city in the county with a population of 19,149. Many community and public service organizations are available to assist Shelby County's citizens and visitors.
